I’ve always been a big animal lover. Because of my concern for both animals and people, another important part of my practice is working with individuals who have lost an animal family member, or are anticipating such a loss.
So often, people who are suffering from the loss of an animal feel isolated, marginalized, invalidated, and traumatized. Their deep grief is frequently met with insincere condolences, flippant remarks, and rolls of the eyes. “It’s only an animal,” is the oft-heard response to these mourners and that is usually followed by, “just get another one.” It’s so important to share your grief with people who truly understand and respect your feelings.
