Animal Bereavement "As the sun and moon share the sky, so we share our lives with the animals."

“…and how often do we look upon them and recognize something of ourselves.” (Matthew Scully, 2002, ‘Dominion’)

I’ve always been a big animal lover. Because of my concern for both animals and people, another important part of my practice is working with individuals who have lost an animal family member.

For many years, people who have suffered the loss of an animal had nowhere to turn. Unfortunately, the deep grief these people feel has often been met with insincere condolences, flippant remarks and rolls of the eyes. “It’s only an animal,” is the oft-heard response to these mourners and that is usually followed by, “just get another one.” It’s so important to share your grief with people who truly understand and respect your feelings.
